Dr. Haroon started his career at Duke University Medical Center and carried out seminal work in angiogenesis, hypoxia, wound healing and tumor development. Some of the key discoveries included his work with the EPO/EPO receptor in cancer and wound healing, role of transcription factor MTF-1 in cancer and induction of angiogenesis without hypoxia in wound healing. He proceeded to SRI Intl (formerly Stanford Research Inst) to head up drug discovery and development. He also established a CRO for outside clients’ drug discovery and development needs. Chiron’s founder and Chairman Bill Rutter recruited him to head up corporate and business development for his venture fund Synergenics. He oversaw science and business for over a dozen Biotechs at Synergenics. He later joined VWR International to lead its worldwide Life science business, a P&L of over $1 Billion. Dr Haroon has been a leading consultant for biotechs, pharmaceuticals and CROs in matters relating to science, business development, sales and marketing. Since joining UNC, he has setup the North Carolina Center for BioMedical and Innovation Translation (now NC BioStart), provided leadership in licensing opportunities for UNC and leading efforts for establishment of Institute for NanoMedicine. Dr Haroon is also our Translation and Commercialization Officer.
